Casa Covarrubias

The thick adobe walls of Casa Covarrubias are coated in white plaster, standing out against the modern storefronts of State Street. Built in eighteen thirty-six, this house served as the home for Domingo Carrillo and his wife, Concepcion Pico. While other homes from that era crumbled, this one remained intact because it functioned as a schoolhouse for many years. Students once learned their lessons in rooms where Spanish aristocrats hosted formal dances, and the original hand-hewn timber rafters still support the roof today.
