Hill Carrillo Adobe

The Hill Carrillo Adobe stands out for its thick, whitewashed walls and the weathered red tile roof that anchors the corner of East Carrillo and Santa Barbara streets. Daniel Hill, a Massachusetts sailor, built this home in eighteen twenty-five for his wife, Rafaela Ortega. It served as one of the few private residences in the pueblo. During the American conquest of California, American officers frequently stayed within these rooms, often while the family lived in the adjacent, more modest quarters.
