The Paseo Nuevo shopping center defines itself with a series of salmon colored stucco walls and terra cotta tiled roofs that mimic the Spanish Colonial architecture found throughout Santa Barbara. It opened in nineteen ninety-two on a site previously occupied by a sprawling parking lot and a series of disconnected older stores. Developers intended to knit the downtown core back together by creating a pedestrian passage that mirrors the layout of traditional Mediterranean village plazas.
