Victoria Court is defined by the arched walkways and thick, cream-colored stucco walls that hide a sunken courtyard from the street. Built in nineteen twenty-nine, it was part of a major effort to give downtown Santa Barbara a uniform Spanish Colonial Revival aesthetic after a massive earthquake leveled the city four years earlier. Architect Leonard Cooke designed the complex to serve as an upscale shopping plaza, banking on the idea that enclosed, breezy gardens would draw locals away from the noise of State Street.
