The Los Baños del Mar pool sits at the edge of the Pacific, identifiable by its bright blue water enclosed by low, white concrete walls that block the direct wind off the ocean. Opened in nineteen thirty-nine, the pool replaced a dilapidated bathhouse that had stood on the sand for decades. When the city built this facility, they installed a sophisticated filtration system that drew seawater directly from the bay, warmed it, and pumped it into the lanes for year-round swimming.
