A bronze pig stands on the sidewalk with a coin slot in its snout. Cast in nineteen eighty-six by sculptor Georgia Gerber, the sculpture is a life-sized replica of a prize-winning pig named Rachel from Island County. The Pike Place Market Foundation installed her to collect donations for social services, and she has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for the neighborhood. People drop coins and bills into her back, waiting for the clatter of change to hit her hollow stomach.
