Occidental Square

The four iron pergolas in Occidental Square stand like skeletal cages over the brick-paved plaza. They were cast in nineteen oh nine to provide rain shelter for passengers waiting for the streetcar, back when this area served as the city's main transit hub. City officials once planned to tear them down in the nineteen sixties to clear space for parking, but local residents fought the demolition, saving the structures. Today, the square remains a gathering spot, anchored by these Victorian-style iron frames.
