Danny Woo Community Garden

The Danny Woo Community Garden clings to the steep hillside of the International District with a series of stepped wooden terraces. This patch of earth emerged in nineteen seventy-five when Danny Woo, a local restaurateur, leased the land from a developer to clear a dumping ground. He cleared the trash and handed plots to elderly neighborhood residents who had nowhere else to grow their own food. Today, those same wooden tiers still hold rows of bok choy, herbs, and flowers tended by hand.
