The Seattle Aquarium sits on Pier Fifty-Nine, identifiable by the large, glass-domed skylight rising above the otherwise flat, industrial roofline of the waterfront. It opened in nineteen seventy-seven as part of a city project to revitalize the aging piers. Before the aquarium moved in, this space served as a cold storage warehouse for fish caught in the North Pacific. A massive, circular tank remains the centerpiece of the main exhibit, holding one hundred and twenty thousand gallons of seawater pulled directly from the bay.
