The Pioneer Building features a jagged roofline of gables and towers that rise above the red brick facade. Designed by architect Elmer Fisher after the Great Seattle Fire of eighteen eighty-nine, it replaced wooden structures that had burned to the ground. Inside, a central glass-roofed atrium floods the interior with daylight, designed to illuminate the offices during Seattle's long, gray winters. Its heavy stone arches and iron ornamentation serve as a reminder of the era's grand ambitions for the city.
