The Pioneer Square Pergola features a delicate web of cast iron painted a deep forest green, topped by a glass roof that mimics the Victorian style of a London subway entrance. Completed in nineteen oh nine, it served as a comfortable waiting area for passengers catching cable cars to the downtown core. City engineers intended it to provide shelter from the constant Seattle drizzle. While the cars stopped running years ago, the iron structure remains, surviving a collision with a truck in two thousand one.
