The Southbank Promenade runs along the southern edge of the Yarra River as a wide, paved walkway lined with restaurants and outdoor cafes. Before the late nineteen eighties, this stretch was a collection of gritty, industrial wharves and decaying warehouses. Developers cleared the old shipping structures to reshape the riverbank into a public space. Today, the Gas Brigade fire show erupts from the water here every night, shooting flames twenty meters into the air to mark the top of the hour.
