The Gledden Building rises as a sharp wedge of cream-colored limestone and glass at the corner of Hay and William Streets. Completed in nineteen thirty-eight, it introduced the streamlined curves of Art Deco architecture to Perth. Robert Gledden, a surveyor who made a fortune in land, commissioned the structure to support the University of Western Australia. He believed the city needed a modern commercial centerpiece, so he hired architect Harold Krantz to craft this elegant, window-wrapped prow that still commands the intersection.
