Cloisters

The Cloisters stands out for its dark, intricately carved brickwork and steep, jagged gables, which look entirely out of place against the glass towers of modern Perth. Bishop Hale built it in eighteen fifty-eight as a secondary school for boys. It served that purpose for less than a decade before the school moved, leaving the building to house everything from a boarding house to government offices. It survived multiple demolition threats because the bricks were laid in an elaborate, decorative bond pattern.
