The P and O Building on William Street features a distinctive rounded corner that echoes the curve of a ship hull. Built in nineteen thirty, the structure serves as a prime example of the interwar functionalist style in Perth. Architect Reginald Summerhayes designed it for the shipping company to house their offices and passenger terminals. During the second world war, the Royal Australian Navy commandeered the upper floors, turning the prime commercial space into a strategic hub for monitoring shipping movements across the Indian Ocean.
