McNess' Royal Arcade

The entrance to McNess' Royal Arcade features a distinctive ornamental archway facing Hay Street. Built in nineteen twenty-two by businessman Charles McNess, this covered walkway cut through a city block to connect two major thoroughfares. McNess intended to provide a sheltered, European-style shopping experience for Perth residents during a period of rapid urban growth. He famously refused to allow any tenants to sell alcohol within the arcade, insisting the space remain a quiet, respectable passage for families and shoppers alike.
