The Badergraben is a steep, narrow ravine cutting through the mountainside of Hallstatt, carrying the runoff of the Echerntal valley down toward the lake. Houses cling to the rock faces on either side of this jagged cleft, built on foundations that bridge the rushing water. In eighteen twenty-two, a massive avalanche surged down this specific channel, burying the structures at its base under snow and debris, a recurring threat that shaped how residents reinforced their homes against the mountain.
