Kirchenstiege

other

The Kirchenstiege is a stone staircase winding steeply upward, tucked between the narrow, tightly packed houses of Hallstatt. It connects the village core directly to the parish church sitting on the rocky outcrop above. Local residents built these steps centuries ago to manage the dramatic vertical climb that the terrain demands. In eighteen twenty-two, a fire destroyed much of the neighborhood, but the stone path remained, serving as the primary passage for wedding processions and funeral corteges moving between the homes and the altar.
