Hallstatt boathouses

The Hallstatt boathouses are narrow, timber-framed structures built directly over the water on wooden stilts, with their rear sides anchored into the steep rock of the Salzkammergut mountains. Each stall holds a traditional wooden boat, essential for transit before the nineteenth century road connected the village to the outside world. In nineteen oh two, a local carpenter named Friedrich Schiffmann began documenting these structures, noting how families maintained them across generations. Salt miners used them to reach their shifts across the lake.
