Kirchenweg

Kirchenweg is a steep, narrow stone staircase that snakes directly up the hillside, pinned between the tightly packed wooden houses of Hallstatt. It exists as the essential vertical artery for a town built on a cliffside where horizontal space vanished centuries ago. In eighteen fifty-nine, a massive fire destroyed much of the lower village, and this path served as the frantic escape route for families carrying what they could save. Today, it remains the primary pedestrian connection linking the lakeshore to the parish church above.
