Salzbergstraße

other

Salzbergstraße is the steep, narrow artery that snakes directly up the mountainside from the Hallstatt lakefront. It follows the precise path taken by miners for over seven thousand years to reach the world’s oldest salt mine. While the town below serves the tourists, this path carries the weight of the mountain’s industry. In eighteen hundred and forty-six, Johann Georg Ramsauer discovered a massive prehistoric cemetery right beneath this trail, revealing thousands of graves from the Bronze and Iron Ages.
