Hallstatt World Heritage Museum

The Hallstatt World Heritage Museum houses a collection of bronze swords, elaborate jewelry, and tools recovered from the high mountain mines above the town. These objects trace seven thousand years of salt mining. In eighteen forty-six, Johann Georg Ramsauer began digging into a burial ground nearby and uncovered thousands of graves. He documented every find with meticulous sketches and watercolors. Those detailed records allowed archaeologists to define an entire era of human history, which they eventually named the Hallstatt culture.
