The Lahn area sits on a flat, man-made terrace of rock and debris pushed out into the deep waters of the Hallstatt lake. Centuries of miners cleared this space to give the village room to grow beyond the narrow shore. In the nineteenth century, this spot became the site of a massive salt warehouse. Barges pulled right up to the heavy timber frames to load their cargo. Today, the area serves as the primary gateway for buses and visitors entering the town.
