Bedeckte Stiege

The Bedeckte Stiege is a narrow, covered wooden staircase tucked between the tightly packed houses of Hallstatt. It bridges the steep elevation change between the lakefront and the higher village paths. In the nineteenth century, when the village faced a severe shortage of buildable land, the locals expanded upward instead of outward. This passage served as an essential vertical thoroughfare for salt miners heading to the pits above. Today, it remains a steep, quiet shortcut that avoids the main tourist thoroughfares entirely.
