Wolfengasse

Wolfengasse is a narrow, sloped passage wedged between the tight timber-framed houses of Hallstatt. It serves as a steep vertical vein for a town that has no room to sprawl. Centuries ago, local salt miners carved these pathways directly into the mountain rock to connect their living quarters. The damp stone walls still sweat from the runoff of the Echerntal glacier above. Miners once navigated these stairs in heavy boots, carrying their meager belongings between the lake shore and the high-altitude shafts.
