The Church of the Assumption, or Maria am Berg, sits on a jagged rock terrace high above the lake, identifiable by its slender, pointed spire that rises sharply against the wall of the Echerntal valley. The current structure replaced a Romanesque chapel in fifteen oh five, designed to serve the prosperous salt mine workers of Hallstatt. A master carpenter named Simon of Gmunden built the late Gothic nave, leaving his mark on the steep, wooden roof framing that still supports the building today.
