The brick building at the corner of East Georgia and Heatley displays a faded, hand-painted sign for Zhao Mah Bakery. For decades, the smell of pork buns and baked goods drifted through the neighborhood, signaling the morning shift for local workers. Before the storefront became a residence, Mah Gow and his wife, Lee Shee, operated the bakery as a community hub. They supplied the neighborhood with affordable, hot meals starting in the early hours, keeping the ovens running long after the sun rose.
