Gaoler's Mews

The red brick archway leading into Gaoler's Mews hides a small, cobblestone courtyard tucked away from the noise of Gastown. It occupies the site of Vancouver's first jailhouse, built in eighteen sixty-seven. John "Jack" Deighton, the man who opened the first saloon in the area, helped oversee the original wooden structure. A single, cramped cell held the troublemakers of the growing logging settlement. Today, the quiet stone path remains a remnant of the rough, early days before the city streets took shape.
