Gastown Steam Clock

The Gastown Steam Clock marks the intersection of Water and Cambie Streets with its bronze casing and four glass dials. Raymond Saunders built this clock in nineteen seventy-seven to hide a steam vent that kept locals awake with its whistling noise. It uses a subterranean steam engine to drive the weights that chime every quarter hour. When the clock whistles, it draws steam from the city's district heating system, sending plumes into the air just as the original underground pipes intended.
