The Allan Memorial Institute sits behind a heavy iron gate, distinguished by the massive stone lions guarding its entrance. Originally the mansion of industrialist Hugh Allan, it was once the most opulent home in Montreal, featuring over seventy rooms and wood imported from all over the world. During the nineteen fifties and sixties, the building became the site of the C I A funded MKUltra mind control experiments, where psychiatrist Ewen Cameron subjected unsuspecting patients to prolonged drug-induced sleep and heavy electrical stimulation.
