Kalamaja Cemetery Park

Kalamaja Cemetery Park features uneven, grassy mounds where thousands of limestone grave markers once stood. From the sixteenth century until nineteen forty-six, this ground served as the primary burial site for the city’s Swedish and Estonian fishermen and craftsmen. Following the Soviet occupation, authorities declared the cemetery a park, leveled the headstones, and used the heavy slabs to reinforce the seawall at the local port. Residents now walk dogs over the graves of their ancestors while the earth slowly settles around hidden, sunken vaults.
