Toompea Castle

Toompea Castle sits atop a steep limestone cliff, distinguished by its tall, pink facade and the Pikk Hermann tower standing at its corner. Since the thirteenth century, whoever held this fortress controlled Tallinn. When the Danish King Valdemar the Second took the hill, he built the first wooden structure here. In nineteen eighteen, the Estonian Declaration of Independence was read from the castle balcony, marking the end of centuries of foreign rule. Today, the parliament of Estonia meets within these stone walls.
