Kiek in de Kök Fortification Museum

The Kiek in de Kök tower rises fifty yards tall with walls four meters thick, anchoring the western end of the Tallinn city wall. Built in fourteen seventy-five, its name means peek into the kitchen in Low German, referring to the height that allowed guards to look down into the chimneys of houses below. During the Livonian War in fifteen seventy-seven, Russian cannons blasted deep iron balls into the tower, which remain embedded in the limestone facade as clear, round scars today.
