Monument aux morts de Strasbourg

The Monument aux morts in the Contades park features a large limestone sculpture of a grieving woman holding a dying soldier in her lap. It commemorates the soldiers of Strasbourg who died during the First World War. When it was inaugurated in nineteen thirty-six, the monument lacked any national flags or symbols of victory. The city wanted to honor the individual lives lost rather than the political outcome of the war, leaving the sculptor, Léon-Ernest Drivier, to focus entirely on human suffering.
