The Palais Universitaire features a heavy, ornate facade topped by a massive dome and four corner towers that mimic the style of the Italian Renaissance. Built in the late nineteenth century by the German authorities, this building signaled the transformation of Strasbourg into a showcase of imperial architecture. Kaiser Wilhelm the Second inaugurated the palace in eighteen eighty-four to assert German academic dominance in the region. During its opening ceremony, the emperor sat through a three-hour speech in French, which he insisted on hearing entirely.
