The two massive, dark sandstone towers of the Église Saint-Paul rise directly above the confluence of the Ill and Aar rivers. Built at the end of the nineteenth century, this Protestant garrison church served German soldiers stationed in Strasbourg. Architect Louis Muller designed the structure to accommodate three thousand worshipers, placing it at a vital intersection to project imperial authority. During the dedication, Emperor Wilhelm the Second personally placed a stone into the foundation to secure his mark on the city.
