Place du Marché Gayot

Place du Marché Gayot stays tucked away behind the Strasbourg Cathedral, marked by the narrow, half-timbered houses that crowd around its cobblestones. This square occupies the former site of the Saint-Guillaume monastery's orchard. In the late eighteen eighties, the city cleared the old convent grounds to widen the neighborhood streets and create this small public space. It eventually took its name from a local lawyer, Gayot, who served as the city's mayor during the turbulent years of the French Revolution.
