Place Kléber

historic

Place Kléber is the vast, open stone square in the heart of Strasbourg, dominated by the bronze statue of Jean-Baptiste Kléber standing high on a pedestal. Born in the city, the French Revolutionary general holds his sword with his left hand, guarding a casket that supposedly contains his remains. During the German annexation, occupying forces removed the statue, but it returned after the First World War. Beneath that bronze figure, the city keeps a small collection of his personal belongings in a hidden vault.
