St. Thomas Church

The Church of Saint Thomas holds a flat, red-tiled roof and a broad, late Gothic facade that distinguishes it from the pointed spires common to Strasbourg. It houses the ornate, eighteenth-century mausoleum of Marshal Maurice de Saxe, a military commander who served King Louis the fifteenth. The Marshal requested a grand final resting place here, even though he was a Protestant. His marble figure stands resolute as Death, depicted as a skeleton, beckons him toward a descending sarcophagus lid.
