The Palais Rohan features three distinct rhythmic wings facing the Ill River, distinguished by a long, pale facade punctuated by tall, rectangular windows and heavy stone balconies. Cardinal Armand Gaston Maximilien de Rohan commissioned this structure in seventeen twenty-eight, intending to project the power of the French monarchy in newly annexed Strasbourg. When the cardinal hosted Louis the fifteenth here in seventeen forty-four, he spent a fortune on extravagant decorations, only to have the king sleep elsewhere after just one night.
