Place Benjamin Zix

The Place Benjamin Zix is a small, triangular paved square where the Ill River splits into narrow canals. A massive, half-timbered house from sixteen hundred and nine anchors one side, its dark wooden beams contrasting against white plaster. This spot earned its name from an Alsatian painter who captured these riverside views in the nineteenth century. Before the square existed, this harbor served the local tanners, who hung hides from the wooden balconies of their houses to dry in the drafty air.
