Quai des Pêcheurs

other

The Quai des Pêcheurs features a long, stone-walled embankment defined by the calm water of the River Ill. Fishermen once lined this edge, selling their daily catch directly from wooden boats to the residents of Strasbourg. In the nineteenth century, this riverbank served as the city's primary fish market. A stone plaque fixed to the wall marks the record flood of eighteen twenty-four, when the water rose high enough to submerge the entire quay and swamp the nearby cellars.
