Poterie d'Alsace

The painted ceramic sign hangs above the door, its colors bright against the limestone facade. This shop operates as an outpost for the traditional earthenware of Soufflenheim, a village where potters have dug clay from the local forest floor since the Bronze Age. In the nineteenth century, these vessels were sold at fairs across Europe for their heat resistance and earthy glaze. The workshop continues that production, filling the shelves with the same butter dishes and baking molds used by grandmothers in the region for generations.
