Thermes Sextius

The Thermes Sextius is marked by a massive, pale stone facade that incorporates original Roman masonry directly into its outer wall. Sextius Calvinus founded the town here in one hundred twenty-two before the common era, specifically to harness the hot sulfurous springs that bubbled up at this precise spot. The Romans built elaborate baths for their soldiers, and people continued to bathe in these same waters for centuries, even as the architecture shifted around them into the modern spa facility standing there today.
