Fontaine des Prêcheurs

landmark

The Fontaine des Prêcheurs features an obelisk rising from the center of a square stone basin, topped by a stone cross. Sculptor Jean-Pancrace Chastel carved the structure in seventeen fifty-eight to mark the location of a former Dominican monastery. When the monks departed, the city council commissioned the fountain to supply fresh water to the residents of the square. A heavy stone arm holds a lantern that has swung over the water here for over two hundred years.
