Fontaine Du Roi René

The Fontaine du Roi René features a marble statue of the fifteenth century monarch holding a bunch of Muscat grapes. King René brought this variety of grape to Provence, a decision that transformed the local economy and culture for centuries. Joseph Ramus carved the statue in eighteen twenty-two to replace an older, damaged monument on the site. The fountain sits at the center of the square, where water pours from three stone dolphins into a tiered basin designed by the architect Penchaud.
