Cour d'appel - Palais Verdun

The Palais Verdun dominates the street with its massive, rusticated stone facade and tall, arched windows designed to project state authority. This building houses the Court of Appeal, where legal decisions for the region are finalized. In nineteen forty-two, German forces seized parts of this complex, forcing the French magistrates to share their chambers with the occupying military police. One judge famously kept his own door locked for weeks, refusing to acknowledge the officers sharing the building until he was physically removed by armed guards.
