Saint Jean de Malte

The octagonal bell tower of Saint Jean de Malte rises above the surrounding rooftops, built from the same honey-colored limestone that characterizes much of Aix-en-Provence. This church served as the burial place for the Counts of Provence during the thirteenth century. When the Knights Hospitaller took over the site, they reconstructed the nave into the tall, austere Gothic style you see today. Inside, the sunlight filters through high stained glass, landing on heavy stone tombs that have remained here for eight hundred years.
