Place des Prêcheurs

Place des Prêcheurs features a sprawling, gravel-covered square anchored by the stone Fontaine des Prêcheurs, which dates back to seventeen fifty-eight. The square earned its name from the Dominican monks, the Preaching Friars, who established their monastery here in the thirteenth century. It served as the central marketplace for centuries, where local farmers traded produce while prisoners from the nearby jail stared down from barred windows, often calling out to the merchants below to barter for scraps of bread or wine.
