The Cours Mirabeau is a wide, tree-lined thoroughfare flanked by seventeenth-century townhouses and massive plane trees that form a continuous canopy. It functions as the boundary between the medieval Old Town and the newer Mazarin district. In nineteen ten, the poet Blaise Cendrars stood here and famously complained that the trees were so thick they blocked the sunlight from reaching the street. People still sit in the cafes today, watching the light filter through the leaves onto the stone pavement.
